Θεατρολόγος, σκηνογράφος, φιλόλογος

Σκηνογράφος, εικαστικός, και ιστορικός-θεωρητικός των παραστατικών τεχνών, με έμφαση στον εικαστικό και παραστασιακό χώρο και τον σκηνογραφικό σχεδιασμό. Έχει στο ενεργητικό της πάνω από εξήντα παραγωγές στο θέατρο, την όπερα, και τον κινηματογράφο, την περφόρμανς και τις εικαστικές δράσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, διερευνώντας πολύ συχνά τον παραστασιακό χώρο ως εγκατάσταση και χωρο-συμβάν και τον εικαστικό χώρο μέσα από το πρίσμα μιας ανορθόδοξης θεατρικότητας. Αριστούχος φιλολογίας και δραματολογίας (Α.Π.Θ.), ολοκλήρωσε την ειδίκευσή της στη σκηνογραφία στο University Arts London (Wimbedon School of Arts (BA) και Central Saint Martins School of Arts & Design αντίστοιχα (MA)). Αριστούχος διδάκτωρ του Τμήματος Θεατρικών Σπουδών του Ε.Κ.Π.Α. με θέμα διατριβής τη συμβολή της μεταπολεμικής και σύγχρονης σκηνογραφίας στις παραστάσεις αρχαίου δράματος και την εικόνα της αρχαιότητας στη μεταπολεμική Ελλάδα. Διδάσκει στο μεταπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα ‘Θεατρικές Σπουδές’ του Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου και στο Ελληνικό Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο (Νεοελληνικό Θέατρο και Κινηματογράφος). Έχει διδάξει επί σειρά ετών στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών (Αθήνα), το Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών και Πελοποννήσου, τη Σχολή του Εθνικού Θέατρου, κά. Τα ακαδημαϊκά, συγγραφικά και ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα εστιάζονται στις σύγχρονες παραστατικές και εικαστικές τέχνες, τον διερυμένο παραστασιακό χώρο, τις ιδιότοπες παραστάσεις και περφόρμανς, τη σκηνογραφία της νεότερης και σύγχρονης περιόδου, τις εικαστικές τέχνες στο θέατρο, και την σκηνική πρόσληψη του αρχαίου ελληνικού δράματος στον 20ό και 21ο αιώνα. Έχει συνεργαστεί με σημαντικούς πολιτισμικούς οργανισμούς την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, έχει συμμετάσχει σε πολυάριθμα φεστιβάλ θεάτρου και κινηματογράφου, και έχει επιμεληθεί εκθέσεις, σειρές διαλέξεων και άλλες πολιτισμικές εκδηλώσεις.

Post-doctoral researcher

Scenographer, visual artist, and theorist of performing and visual arts, with an emphasis on performance design and scenography. She has worked as a freelance scenographer and visual artist for more than sixty productions in all sorts of performing arts genres and film in Greece and abroad, most often exploring theatrical space as live event-space and experimenting with installation and performance space through the prism of an unorthodox theatricality. Maria holds a degree in Literature and Theatre Studies, and she studied Design for Performance Space in the University Arts London (BA (Wimbledon School of Art), MA (Central St. Martins School of Art and Design)). In her Doctoral Thesis (PhD) at the University of Athens she examined the contribution of postwar scenography in outdoor performances of ancient drama and the image of antiquity in postwar Greece. She is currently Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the Open University of Cyprus (MA Theatre Studies) and at the Hellenic Open University (Greek Theatre and Film). She has taught extensively at academic level (Athens School of Fine Arts, University of Patras, National Theatre Drama School). Her current research interests and publications focus on history and theory of modern and contemporary scenography, theatre and performance in public space, environmental, site-specific and multimedia performance, contemporary reception of classical performance and new media art. Recently, she was co-Curator for Theory in the Hellenic Participation for Prague Quadrennial ’15 and curated the series of Lectures ’Site Specifics: Τhe Politics of Space and Place’ at Benaki Museum. She has participated in many international theatre and film festivals, exhibitions and other cultural events.
